On September 4, 2024, the Police Command in Niger State confirmed an attack on MI Wushishi Estate in Minna by individuals suspected to be illegal artisan miners operating near the area. The incident resulted in the death of one person and significant property damage.

According to SP Wasiu Abiodun, the Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Police Command, the attack occurred around 2:00 PM when a distress call reported that illegal miners, along with miscreants and thugs, were engaging in a violent confrontation and targeting homes within the estate. In response, a police patrol team led by the Divisional Police Officer of the Maitumbi Division was promptly dispatched to the scene, where they managed to disperse the attackers.

Tragically, one individual, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was killed by the assailants. The victim’s body has been transported to the General Hospital morgue. The police have since restored normalcy to the area, with patrol teams stationed to prevent further incidents. An investigation is underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

This attack follows the recent ban by the Niger State Government on illegal mining activities due to rising insecurity and environmental concerns in the region. The attackers reportedly invaded the estate in large numbers, causing extensive damage to vehicles, houses, and other property while many residents were away at work.
