Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has denounced the anti-Yoruba comments made by a Nigerian-Canadian woman. Obi described the remarks as “bigotry taken too far” and stated that such divisive comments should be unanimously rejected.
The woman, identified as Amaka Patience Sunnberger, threatened to poison Nigerians from the Southwest (Yorubas) and Edo State (Binis) due to their perceived hatred for Igbos. In a viral audio clip, Sunnberger suggested that it was time for Igbos to retaliate against their detractors, claiming that the Yorubas and Binis were “of no use to society.”
In response, Obi condemned the hateful statements, emphasizing that tribal bigotry does nothing to address Nigeria’s significant issues, such as poverty or high living costs. He urged Nigerians to focus on competence and unity over tribal affiliations, advocating for the rejection of tribalism and the embrace of shared humanity in building a prosperous and united Nigeria.
