KANO GOVERNMENT INAUGURATES COMMITTEE TO RESOLVE CRISIS IN YORUBA COMMUNITY

The Kano State Government has inaugurated a Reconciliation Committee to address the ongoing crisis within the Yoruba community in the state. The committee has been tasked with identifying both the immediate and underlying causes of the conflict, as well as assessing the roles played by various internal and external parties.

Dr. Abdullahi Bichi, the Secretary to the State Government, inaugurated the committee on Thursday on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. In his address, Bichi emphasized the importance of the Yoruba community as an integral part of Kano’s society. He expressed confidence in the committee members, noting their leadership qualities and experience.

The committee’s terms of reference include inviting the two conflicting factions, the Oba group and the Aare group, to discuss the crisis. Additionally, the committee will gather input from relevant associations, interest groups, and individuals residing in Kano. The Kano Emirate Council, due to its involvement in certain appointments, will also be consulted.

The committee is expected to determine the root causes of the conflict, evaluate the involvement of various parties, and offer solutions and recommendations. The committee is to submit its report within four weeks from the date of its inauguration.

The committee is composed of members from academia, with Prof. Usman Muhammad serving as Chairman and Dr. Ransom Bello as Co-Chairman. Other members include Prof. Afolabi Falola, Prof. Ibrahim Khalil, Prof. Akindele Muqaddas, Prof. Usman Malumfashi, Prof. Nuruddeen Salahuddeen, and a representative of the Kano Emirate Council.

In his remarks, Prof. Muhammad pledged to employ effective conflict resolution strategies to address the crisis, while Dr. Bello expressed gratitude to the state government for the opportunity to serve and committed to fulfilling the committee’s mandate.

Abdussalam Abiola, Special Adviser to the Governor on Inter-Community Relations for Yoruba Affairs, called on the Yoruba community to support the committee’s efforts in restoring peace.
