On August 22, 2024, Nigeria’s First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, launched the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Economic Empowerment Programme in Awka, Anambra State. This initiative aims to support small and medium enterprises by providing ₦50,000 grants to 1,000 women petty traders in each state and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Represented by Dr. Nonye Soludo, wife of the Anambra State Governor, the First Lady emphasized the crucial role of women petty traders in Nigeria’s local economy. She highlighted that these grants are designed to help overcome business challenges, expand their operations, create jobs, and contribute to economic growth.
Sen. Tinubu stated, “The empowerment of 1,000 women petty traders across the nation is part of our commitment to economic growth and improving the lives of families. These women are the backbone of our local economies, and supporting them helps ensure their prosperity and that of their communities.”
Beneficiaries received their grants with gratitude. Nnaemeka Nwachukwu, a trader from Idemili South, expressed her appreciation, stating, “This money is coming at a time when we need it the most. It will surely go a long way in boosting our trades and supporting our families.”
The event also featured cooking and dancing competitions, with prizes provided by PZ Wilmar, makers of Mamador oil. Ms. Esther Bankole, Area Sales Manager of Mamador in Onitsha, presented the gifts to the winners.
This initiative aligns with the federal administration’s broader economic reform objectives, aiming to foster growth and stability within Nigeria’s small business sector.
