PETER OBI URGES CAUTION IN NLC PRESIDENT’S POLICE SUMMONS

Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has expressed significant concern over the recent police summons issued to Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). Obi has urged the government to handle the situation with extreme care to avoid exacerbating tensions with the labor force.

Ajaero was summoned on August 19 over allegations including terrorism financing and cybercrime. This summons, signed by ACP Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, has caused considerable unease, given Ajaero’s prominent role as the leader of Nigeria’s workforce.

Obi emphasized the need for due process and cautioned against autocratic approaches that might further polarize relations between the government and labor unions. He stressed the importance of adhering to the rule of law and maintaining democratic order.

In response to the summons, the NLC convened an emergency National Executive Council meeting. The council resolved to shut down the nation if Ajaero was detained or arrested, while also calling on Ajaero to cooperate with the police invitation. The NLC has vowed to defend its leader against any perceived injustice.
