The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 39 cases of mpox across 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory, prompting the agency to intensify surveillance efforts nationwide. Despite the rise in cases, there have been no reported deaths.

During a press briefing, NCDC Director General Jide Idris emphasized the agency’s commitment to swiftly detecting and responding to new cases to curb the spread and protect public health. He assured the public of the proactive measures being taken, including heightened alertness at Nigeria’s five international airports, ten seaports, and 51 land borders.

Specific states, such as Lagos, Enugu, and Kano, have been placed under increased surveillance. This action aligns with the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) recent declaration of mpox as a global public health emergency, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance as Nigeria faces a growing number of cases.
