Inconsistent rainfall could negatively impact crop yields, farmers warn

Farmers across Nigeria are expressing concern over the inconsistent rainfall patterns this year, warning that it could significantly affect crop yields. While some crops might benefit, others are likely to suffer due to the reduced and uneven distribution of rainfall.

Rabiu Zuntu, Chairman of the Tomatoes Growers Association in Kaduna State, pointed out that different crops require varying amounts of rain at different stages of their growth. For example, crops like maize, cassava, and beans need consistent rainfall to thrive, and the current insufficient rainfall could lead to lower yields. Zuntu also explained that while tomatoes require substantial rain during their early and middle stages, too much rain at the end stage can be detrimental.

Omotunde Banjoko, an agriculture analyst, emphasized the need for farmers to shift from seasonal farming to irrigated farming to counteract the effects of climate change. He noted that the current climate conditions could stunt crop growth, leading to significantly reduced harvests. Banjoko urged the government to invest in irrigation systems and activate river basins to ensure water availability for farming throughout the year.

However, Uche Ikenga, a crop farmer, offered a different perspective, stating that the inconsistent rain has so far been beneficial in preventing flooding. He believes that if the rainfall pattern remains slightly low but consistent, it could lead to a good harvest by September or October.
