Jamaican music icon Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidjah Palmer, has been focusing on his health since his release from prison on July 31, 2024. Just hours after his release, Kartel released a new album, but his primary concern now is managing his health.

In an interview with FOX 5’s Lisa Evers, Kartel spoke about his ongoing health regimen with his doctor to address his condition. “Healthwise, you know I’m working on my health right now, but the feeling of just being free is just an amazing feeling,” Kartel shared.

Kartel’s release followed a court ruling against a retrial in the murder case of Clive “Lizard” Williams, whose body was never found. Throughout his imprisonment, Kartel battled Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder affecting the thyroid gland. This condition had severely impacted his heart function, with his physician, Dr. Karen Phillips, warning of significant risks, including potential heart attacks or death during sleep.

The court took Kartel’s health issues into account when making its decision, acknowledging that his condition could prevent him from serving a longer sentence if a retrial had occurred.

Despite the health challenges and 13 years in prison, Kartel’s music has remained influential, and he continues to be a major figure in dancehall music. His distinctive voice and impactful lyrics have cemented his legacy as a dancehall icon.
