Senate President Godswill Akpabio has emphasized the importance of creating an environment in Nigeria that encourages young people to build their futures within the country rather than seeking opportunities abroad. Speaking at the 2024 National Diaspora Day Celebrations, Akpabio, represented by Senator Sani Bello, highlighted the need to address the “Japa Phenomena”—a trend where many talented Nigerians seek opportunities outside the country.

Akpabio urged that efforts should be focused on enhancing job prospects, improving security, and investing in critical sectors like education, healthcare, and infrastructure to create a supportive economy. He stressed that this aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the legislative goals of the National Assembly. The Senate President underscored the value of the diaspora community and encouraged those abroad to stay committed to Nigeria’s progress, using their skills and experiences to contribute to national development.

Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), praised Nigerians in the diaspora for their hard work, patriotism, and resilience. She highlighted various initiatives and achievements of NiDCOM, including the National Diaspora Day Celebrations and the National Diaspora Merit Award ceremony, which recognizes the contributions of Nigerians abroad.

Dabiri-Erewa also mentioned the Badagry Door of Return Festival, a new initiative aimed at reconnecting descendants of Africans taken during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade with their ancestral roots in Nigeria. This event, she noted, is part of efforts to attract diaspora Africans back to their homeland for both residence and business.
