Afolabi Olalekan’s ‘Freedom Way’ to screen at 2024 Toronto International Film Festival

Afolabi Olalekan’s debut feature film, *Freedom Way*, has been selected for the Discovery Programme at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Scheduled for its world premiere during the festival, which runs from September 5 to September 15, 2024, *Freedom Way* will be showcased among emerging international cinematic talents.

The film explores the challenges faced by a diverse group of individuals in contemporary Nigeria, including three young startup co-founders, a motorcyclist, a doctor, and a police pair. Central to the narrative is the issue of police brutality and harassment, a pressing concern in Nigeria.

The cast features Adebowale Adebayo, Jable Ogranya, Jesse Suntele, Mike Afolarin, Femi Jacobs, and Bimbo Akintola. The screenplay and production are handled by Blessing Uzzi. Olalekan, who has personal experience with police harassment, drew inspiration from his own encounters to tell this story.

In a statement, Olalekan expressed gratitude for TIFF’s support, highlighting the festival’s role in promoting arts and filmmakers. The director, who is also known for his work on music videos for artists like Rema and Ayra Starr, is excited to present his feature film debut to an international audience.
