The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) recently conducted successful operations targeting illegal oil refining sites in Rivers State and combating terrorists in Niger State. According to AVM Edward Gabkwet, the Director of Public Relations and Information for NAF, these operations were part of efforts to curb the activities of oil thieves and economic saboteurs across Nigeria.

In the Niger Delta region, specifically in Willcourt, the Air Component of Operation Delta Safe identified and destroyed three Illegal Refining Sites (IRS) hidden under dense mangrove vegetation. These sites were equipped with seven overhead tanks used to store stolen crude oil products from pipelines. Additionally, NAF intercepted and destroyed four boats suspected of transporting illegally refined products downstream.

During these operations, NAF also engaged with speedboats carrying suspected oil thieves. Despite attempts to evade capture, the air component pursued and intercepted one speedboat, leading to the arrest of five suspects who were attempting to flee the area.

In another successful operation in Niger State, based on intelligence about terrorists hiding at Dandunu following cattle rustling incidents, NAF deployed its air assets. The operation resulted in the interception of the terrorists who were attempting to flee on nine motorcycles with the rustled cattle. NAF conducted multiple airstrikes, eliminating most of the terrorists and recovering the rustled cattle, much to the relief and gratitude of the local communities.

These operations highlight NAF’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal activities such as oil theft and terrorism across different regions of Nigeria, employing modern technology and strategic coordination with ground troops to achieve significant successes.
