Timi Frank, the former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has issued a warning to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, cautioning him against making statements that could potentially incite a Kenyan-style uprising in Nigeria. This warning was in response to Akpabio’s recent comments endorsing President Bola Tinubu’s plan to purchase a new presidential aircraft worth billions of Naira.

In a statement released on Monday, July 1, Frank criticized Akpabio for not investigating the expenditure of ₦214 billion allocated for aircraft maintenance and for not suggesting alternative solutions, such as selling some existing aircraft or helicopters to offset the cost of purchasing new ones. Frank emphasized that the parliament’s role is to provide robust checks and balances on the government, which is fundamental to a healthy democracy.

Frank accused Akpabio of encouraging the executive branch’s spending decisions despite the severe economic challenges faced by taxpayers. He expressed concern over Akpabio’s approach, stating that it undermines the legislative procedures and disrespects the office of the National Assembly.

Frank highlighted the importance of ensuring diligent scrutiny of money bills before the Senate to prevent profligacy and waste. He also pointed out that an aircraft’s age does not inherently affect its safety or airworthiness, as all aircraft undergo regular maintenance and inspections to ensure safe operation.

Frank questioned the allocation and usage of the ₦214 billion for aircraft maintenance from 1999 to date, challenging Akpabio’s support for the new aircraft purchase without first addressing the existing expenditure issues.
