UEFA announced on Tuesday that the 2027 Champions League final will be relocated from the San Siro in Milan due to uncertainties regarding potential renovations. The governing body of European football stated that Milan could not guarantee that the stadium and its surrounding area “would not be affected by refurbishment works.”
As a result, UEFA decided to reopen the bidding process for a suitable venue, with an announcement expected in May or June 2025.
Earlier this month, AC Milan and Inter Milan, both of whom play their home matches at the San Siro, declined a project aimed at modernizing the historic stadium, which is owned by the city of Milan. Mayor Giuseppe Sala indicated that both clubs are prepared to revive their initial plan for a new stadium near San Siro, a project that was halted last year due to political and bureaucratic challenges.
This year, AC Milan acquired land in San Donato Milanese, southeast of the city, as part of a strategy to move beyond Milan’s official boundaries, hoping to secure building approval more easily. Meanwhile, reigning Serie A champions Inter are exploring options in Rozzano and Assago, just south of Milan, and assessing the possibility of developing on former industrial land in the populous northern suburb of Sesto San Giovanni.
In 2026, the San Siro will serve as the venue for the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
